Shin splints are very common among runners. Especially new runners or runners who have increased their stress loads quickly. The symptom is a very sharp pain in the effected area. Cause; Stress to Shin Bone (Tibia) causing micro tears to the connective tissue that is attached to the bone.
So we know what it is. Stress to the lower leg caused usually by increasing stress via harder workouts. How do we prevent it?
1. Slow increments to your overall workout… schedule. 2. Proper warm up. 3. Immediately stop workout at the hint of shin splints. Number three is probably the single best way to handle the problem. Ice and rest the leg until workload can continue.
If you try to fight through your run you will only prolong the healing. If you cannot face a day without a workout try biking and if that is to much the pool is your last resort.
Have a great run. smile emoticon
